Beyond it's role as the February birthstone, Amethyst is associated with serenity and clarity, along with qualities including peace, courage, and stability. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word amethystos, meaning "not drunken". Ancient Greeks and Romans believed the stone prevented intoxication and guarded against bad habits.
